Leaving the Scene of an Accident
In Texas, it is a serious criminal offense to leave the scene of an accident without providing contact, insurance and driver information to the other person involved in the accident or the owner of any property damaged. This crime is called “hit and run” and may be charged as a misdemeanor or a felony, depending upon the extent of property damage, if any, and whether another person was seriously injured or lost their life as a result of the accident. Even if a person was not at fault, leaving the scene of an accident is still considered illegal. The only exceptions to the rule may be if the driver reasonably didn’t know that he or she was involved in an accident, or if the driver was injured and therefore unable to provide his or her contact information.
Hiring an experienced criminal defense attorney is valuable if you or someone you know is facing criminal charges of any kind. Perhaps you were falsely accused, or you believe that you had good reason to leave the scene. A legal professional is your best opportunity of having your side of the story communicated in the courtroom, and of avoiding a conviction and therefore serious penalties.
